Dear colleague:
Does
your newsroom fail to take advantage of the opportunity to be recognized
for outstanding journalism?
The
best journalism that is produced each year in the Americas is presented
at the annual General Assembly of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA).
The
IAPA is an organization with a membership of more than 1,300 publications,
that for more than 60 years, has been dedicated to defending and nourishing
freedom of the press in the Western Hemisphere.
The
competition for the annual IAPA awards is unparalleled in the industry.
Newspapers
and news agencies of some 33 nations of North, Central and South America
and the Caribbean submit their best works in English, Spanish or Portuguese
to the IAPA headquarters in Miami by the contest deadline of February
1.
The
adjudicating panel – made up of newspaper editors and publishers from
the Mexico, Peru, United States, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, among others
– evaluates the entries in any of the three languages and chooses
winners during the IAPA Midyear Meeting held every year in the month of
March. The winners later receive diplomas and cash prizes of up to $2,000,
presented during the General Assembly held the following October.
Awards
are in 11 categories, including inter-American relations, human rights,
news coverage, features, in-depth reporting, photography, cartoons, infographics,
opinion, newspaper in education and, the new category, online news coverage.
Also
awarded is a special prize called the IAPA Grand Prize for Freedom of the
Press, given to a person or organization that has made outstanding efforts
on behalf of freedom of the press in the Western Hemisphere. In previous
years, journalists from Colombia, Cuba and Venezuela have received the award
collectively for their defense of this freedom.
A
publication need not be a member of the IAPA to take part in the contest,
although we do encourage all the publications to assess our mission with
a view to becoming a member. We have a formidable professional network that
leads to professional relationships that often become lifelong friendships.
An
essential requirement for entry is that the submitted work must have been
published in 2005.
Despite
the IAPA’s important mission and its wide-ranging significance, a
number of newspapers do not take part in the annual awards contest. Many
American newspaper editors believe – erroneously – that only
entries from Latin America have a chance of winning. But in fact every work
published on hemisphere topics qualifies to compete.
We
take this opportunity to invite you to participate to each of the two upcoming
meetings. Our next Midyear Meeting will be in Quito, Ecuador, from March
17 through the 20th of 2006; followed by the General Assembly in Mexico
City, Mexico, on September 29 through October 3rd, 2006.
Sincerely,
| Gustavo
